Reference Librarian: A librarian is the head of an institution. As the administrative head, he is responsible for the overall administration and management of the library. He determines the strategy for achieving the goals and objectives of the library. For this, he has to perform various responsibilities.
In simple words, the one who can give the correct answer to all the reference questions that all the users who come to the library bring in a very short time is called a reference librarian. Reference Service is direct, personal, and assistant to users seeking information in person or by telephone mail etc.
Functions of a reference librarian:
The main work of a reference librarian is two. Reference work and the other is reference service. First, reference work and the other is reference service. After finishing, the service work has to be completed. On one side, he has inquisitive readers and on the other side, library materials, and in the middle, the reference librarian. This is his job. Every rich library has a reference department and in that department there is a reference librarian. He does many library works.

The following is a discussion of the duties of a reference librarian under the chief librarian of a large library.
1. Supervision: Administrative and Informational Responsibilities of a Reference Librarian
He directly assists the Chief Librarian in the management of the library. He takes an active part in the management of the library by providing information on the library books being served or to be served and by providing the relevant and accurate information to the Chief Librarian. He provides two types of information to the Chief Librarian.
A. Administrative information
B. Informational information.
A. Administrative information:
He constantly informs the Chief Librarian about how the library is being run. He assists the Chief Librarian by providing information on where any employee has neglected his work or where any employee has been replaced so that the service work in the library will increase. Taking care of the entire library staff is considered one of his main responsibilities.
B. Informational information:
He informs the Chief Librarian about the various needs of the library users. Provides information to the head librarian, ensuring that the library has an understanding of the type of readership and which of their diverse needs are most important. The main task of the reference librarian is to coordinate and compile the diverse needs of readers.
2.Information Services: The Core Role of a Reference Librarian
The main job of a reference librarian is to provide accurate answers to various types of readers’ queries in the library. He has to do many creative tasks to provide accurate answers to the readers’ queries.
A. Answering All Questions:
The reference librarian needs to be prepared to respond immediately when a reader asks a question. The curriculum presents him with numerous inquiries that must be answered accurately. For instance, if a reader asks about the “Movements of the British Library”, the librarian should promptly direct them to the appropriate sources of information.
B. Contact with Various Institutions:
The reference librarian maintains connections with other institutions related to their library. If you need information or guidance on where to find specific resources in the library, the librarian can refer you to another well-equipped library. This way, if you visit that library, you can obtain the information you need.
C. Collection of various reference books:
In order to provide good reader service, he has to collect various references and find out what kind of information is contained in the compiled book as a whole. So that the reader can answer as soon as he asks.
D. Must have an idea about the content of the reference book:
The reference librarian must have a military idea about the different contents of a reference book, that is, about the contents of different reference books.
E. Guidance service in preparation:
In addition, the reference librarian has to prepare information on several common topics. This is also the work of the reference librarian. If necessary, those special readers have to be provided, that is, if those topics are prepared in advance, the reader gets them as soon as he asks, so his interest in the library increases.
3. Instructional Role of a Reference Librarian
Another significant job of the reference librarian is giving instructions. He/She carries out this instruction in two ways. For example –
a. Library staff
b. Library users
a. Library staff: He/She gives various instructions to the library staff to provide proper reader services to improve the quality of the library. It is the job of the reference librarian to give clear instructions on when and where to work.
b. Library users:
There are not many new library users who do not know the rules of library use. He/She reserves the responsibility and right to train these readers on library use. That is, it is the job of a reference librarian to provide basic understanding of how to use the library.
4. Evaluation: Role of the Reference Librarian in Assessing Library Services
The last task that a reference librarian completes is the evaluation and valuation of library services. He evaluates how much the reading public has benefited from his library. He evaluates the quality of his library services, the demand for books, the redundancy of books (which are not needed), etc. A form is printed in advance regarding the evaluation of the work.
5. Guidance Services of a Reference Librarian
This means leading or directing. Leadership here means helping readers to become well-educated by using the library. The functions of a reference librarian include advising readers on all aspects of the library and providing them with information.
a. Providing advisory services and searching for possible information so that more readers can gain their own education through reading habits.
b. To help those who rarely or cannot visit the library with the necessary bibliography so that they can select books according to their own preferences and find satisfaction in reading them.
Bibliographical Services: A Key Function of the Reference Librarian
Readers engaged in research and higher education need assistance from the library’s own resources and book materials. For this purpose, all kinds of lists suitable for research have to be prepared and services have to be provided. In short, all these activities are called bibliographic services. Bibliographic services are a broad subject, usually provided to researchers.
A reference librarian acts as a bridge between library users and information resources. By providing accurate information, guidance, reference services, bibliographical assistance, and evaluating library services, the reference librarian helps users make the best use of library resources. Thus, an efficient reference librarian is essential for providing effective and user-centered library services.
